Marita Gumbs

In 2010, I became a NASM (National Academy of Sports Medicine) Certified Personal Trainer. At the time, I was competing as an Amateur Boxer, however, while passionate about being active and competing in sports, fitness was not and is not my passion. Sure, fitness has helped me be a better athlete and more functional. However, my true passion is health and I recognize fitness as being a huge component of that. My desire has always been to help others and since my early twenties my desire has been to help people achieve healthier lifestyles. Sure, it feels great to have your clothes fit better, be able to have a little muscle to flex and I am all in to help you achieve this! However, what really feels good is to be able to play ball with your kids, go on long walking tours to explore a new city, embark on adventurous excursions while on vacation, and wake up in the morning with the energy to seize the day and be your best. While moving is the most important thing, I cannot emphasize enough the importance of cross-training, managing injuries and tackling muscular imbalances. In 2017, I become certified through the Medical Exercise Training Institute (METI) (a part of the American Academy of Health, Fitness and Rehab Professionals) as a Medical Exercise Specialist. As a fitness trainer I am certified to work with clients who are asymptomatic, but as a medical exercise specialist I can also work with clients who are symptomatic. When I train clients, I take careful note of past injuries, posture and movement patterns and design a program that allows them to build strength, manage and eliminate pain, and become more functional. It is my belief, that with better health we can move mountains, build bridges and break ground. Fitness is about health, good health is about living life, indulging in its greatest joys and making a positive impact on the world around you.
